Ecos de Trovas is divided into 7 short pieces and has the same titles as Francisco de Lacerda’s 7 Trovas. Without any programmatic relation, Ecos de Trovas quotes or paraphrases various passages from the Azorean composer's work. The harmonies amplify or contract intervalically, making Lacerda’s tonal/modal idiom metamorphose into an unusual chromatic field. Textural and timbral layers fight and merge, even when they seem antagonistic, thus generating a heterogeneous combination of sound collages. There is a play between the recognizable and the unrecognizable, mostly by gradual processes, as if these chords, textures and instrumental techniques sprout from those originally composed, but avoiding any harsh or satirical contrasts that destroy the original elements.
