Details as performer
Luís Neto da Costa is a Portuguese composer dedicated to broadening instrumental vocabulary and developing techniques based on the harmonic series, a primary focus of his doctoral research. He has collaborated with several musicians to explore extended techniques, including “muffled sounds” for clarinet, pivot-finger multiphonics for saxophone, and distinctive sound qualities of the violin body. He often develops computer-aided composition tools and occasionally incorporates electronics into his compositions, with recent projects involving the creation of video scores.

His compositions have been performed by renowned ensembles and orchestras, including Ensemble Suono Giallo, Ensemble Recherche, Aleph Guitar Quartet, Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble, Remix Ensemble, Porto Symphony Orchestra, Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, ars ad hoc, among others. He has received commissions from several prestigious institutions, such as Festival DME and Casa da Música, where he was a resident artist, as well as MISO Music, Festival delle Nazioni, Arte no Tempo, Portuguese Composers Association, and Antena 2. To date, he has been honored with nine composition awards, which include the Francisco de Lacerda Composer Prize by Millennium bcp Foundation.

He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki under the supervision of Dimitri Papageorgiou, Franck Bedrossian (KUG-Graz), and Emilios Cambouropoulos, with support from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.

His educational background includes a Composition degree from ESMAE in Porto, a Master’s in Music Teaching from the University of Aveiro, and a Post-Graduation in Composition from ESML in Lisbon. He has participated in masterclasses such as OutHear New Music Week with Klangforum Wien, IlSUONO Contemporary Music Week, and CROMA, and he interacted with composers such as Luis Naón, Pierluigi Billone, and Harrison Birtwistle, among others.

Neto da Costa has experience in conducting and has worked with groups such as the Remix Ensemble, as part of an international master class with Peter Rundel, and the ESMAE Contemporary Music Ensemble, among others. Furthermore, he has taught Analysis and Composition in recent years.
