Program Notes
This work was born out of a visit I made to Pedras Salgadas, which was linked to the "9aldeias1povo" project, in which each guest composer visits a village in Chaves and gets to know its people, customs, songs, stories etc.
From my visit, I'd like to highlight that I was able to learn about the origins of the famous Água das Pedras, visiting its museum and the thermal baths that gave birth to it, and I was also able to listen to an old man who was full of life singing marches from his land, accompanied by his accordion.
So I based my work on the tranquillity of the water of Pedras Salgadas, using aquatic sounds through the choir and soft, undulating harmonies in the band, then interrupting this calm with the joy of the march I heard, using bouncy, folkloric excerpts from it. The piece ends with a quasi-religious meditation on the Catholic tradition inherent in Portuguese villages.
