Program Notes
This piece was inspired by a presentation by the anthropologist Tim Ingold on 11 May 2023 in Graz (Austria), entitled "How the world makes itself heard". In it, Tim Ingold asked: 'Does a falling tree make a sound if there's no one to hear it? It depends on what we mean by sound. If it's a physical impulse, transmitted through the air, then 'yes'; if it's something we register in our minds, then 'no''. Based on this premise, I decided to record the sounds from inside a tree during one of my visits to my parents' house near Chaves (Portugal). Using technology, I focused on recording vibrations from the root, trunk and branches, placing them in interaction with the surrounding sounds, which propagate through the air. The wind blew and the constituent parts of the tree swayed differently. From the imperceptible movements of the root and trunk to the more oscillating movements of the branches. When I first heard the vibrations from inside the tree, it clearly struck me that almost all sounds are lost in our normal hearing process. With this work I intend to reflect on the phenomenon of auditory attention, by mediating sounds from one sonic space to another medium - in this case to acoustic instruments.
