Program Notes
Florbela Espanca's poetry is imagined here as a messenger of the Love Songs of the trobairitz and troubadours of the 12th century in the South of France. Troubadours write and sing their own verses, living under the code/ethics of Paratge, the principle of equality and balance. Florbela's perseverance and strong, distinctly post-romantic lyrical personality come together in Volúpia, this little opera that I present to you here, with the melodies of medieval Occitania. The Love Songs and the whole tradition of troubadour music appear as a source of study and inspiration on what musical composition today and Florbela Espanca's poetry in the 20th century evoke in us by coming into contact with the ancient tradition of Provencal society. The indomitable and ferocious desire felt in Florbela Espanca's poem recalls the bitter and merciless warnings of some Provençal songs, a love that is always between the mundane and the sublime - a typically operatic tension.
