MIGUEL AZGUIME IN FOCUS ON THE MIC.PT IN JULY
Composer, poet, performer as well as director and co-founder of Miso Music Portugal and the Portuguese Music Research & Information Centre, Miguel Azguime is in July the composer In Focus on the MIC.PT.
His creative universe reflects a multifaceted approach, challenging an almost mystical vision of the art. One of the decisive moments in his path took place in 1985 with the creation of the Miso Ensemble, with Paula Azguime (flute) and Miguel Azguime (percussion). The duo distinguished itself through the search for a new way of making music and through promoting a different ideal for personal and collective life.
Miguel Azguime’s affirmation as composer occurred during the 1990s. Nowadays his music and personal language is widely recognized. Another decisive moment in his career was the DAAD residency in Berlin (2006). This context encouraged the creation and production of the multimedia opera Salt Itinerary – the culmination of integration between poetic and music writing, within the domain designated as “words as meaning/words as music”. This approach, connected with the visual and dramaturgical collaboration with Paula Azguime, is typical in his other operatic works, The Little Girl Water Droplet (2011) and A Laugh to Cry (2013). Various traces of these principles can also be found in his chamber, instrumental and electroacoustic music, in the more recent works premiered in 2016 (Descriptions de la Matière, ConCordas, Illuminations), as well as in the piece Trabalho Poético I: árvore, commission by the D. Luís I Foundation, which will be premiered on July 9 in Cascais during the composer’s monographic concert.
Apart from this new work and the various recent premieres, 2016 will also bring two monographic CD editions with Miguel Azguime’s music – a new CD with chamber works and the edition of the remastered version of the A Laugh to Cry Op-Era. And at the end of the year, giving continuity to the path initiated with the Salt Itinerary, Miguel Azguime will premiere a new work for solo voice, electronics and video, within a performance that is born, as always, from his creative partnership with Paula Azguime. In July visit the MIC.PT In Focus section with the questionnaire/interview to Miguel Azguime.
