 As Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation scholarship holder, Isabel Soveral studied Music at the National Conservatoire with Jorge Peixinho and Joly Braga Santos. In 1988 she became student at the Stony Brook University (New York), where she studied with Daria Semegen and Bülent Arel. At this university she was scholarship holder of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Luso-American Foundation and the Fulbright Foundation, in the framework of the Master’s and PhD Composition programmes.

Since 1995 Isabel Soveral has been professor of Composition, Theory and Music Analysis in the scope of the Licentiate Music and Music Education courses, the Master’s Music and Music Education programmes and in the framework of the PhD Music programme at the Art and Communication Department of the University of Aveiro. Presently, she is director of the Electroacoustic Music Research Centre (CIME), creator of the EAW - Electroacoustic Winds platform, and coordinator of the International EAW Congress.

Isabel Soveral is also member of the INET-MD (Institute of Ethnomusicology – Music and Dance Research Centre), where she coordinates the Composition, Theory and Music Technology Group (CTTM). Since 2008, she has been member of the Scientific Council of the Portuguese Music Research & Information Centre (CIIMP).

Isabel Soveral’s scores are published by the Musicoteca, Fermata, Cecilia Honegger, Edições IPCB, Edições MPMP and the MIC.PT. Various of her works have been released on CDs by Portugalsom & Strauss, EMI Classics, Nova Música, Capella, Deux-Elles, Plancton Music, Numérica, Portugaler and Miso Records.

Isabel Soveral’s works have been performed in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Bulgaria, Poland, Hong Kong, Macau, Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and the United States. The distinctive factor in her compositional universe – both at the macro and micro level – is the morphosis, or else, the constant transformation from work to work;she has a particular inclination for uniting her pieces in cycles. Being strongly influenced by the modernist movement, her music also possesses a “visual” component – it is reflected in Isabel Soveral’s way of working with the “sonic masses” or “fabrics” (as the composer calls her music material).
