I wrote the Solo Viola Sonata by comission of the musician João Pedro Delgado, even though I already had the project of writing a work of this kind. However, the ocasion for it to be written and played hadn’t appeared yet. The work develops itself around
a chormatic idea that appears, sometimes under disguise, in all movements, interchanging with other ideas based in open strings and natural harmonics. This tension between chromatism and diatoni- cism as always been part of my lan- guage, however it assumes a more important role in the present work. Each movement, nevertheless con- tasting at some point, is also unified by the weight of the open C string, note with which all movements but the second begin. The dark tone of the viola allows a melancholic and heavy musical character, and, from that point of view, this sonata is a result of the own natural character of the instrument.
