Quadramorphosis is the first piece of a large cycle of pieces for instruments and tape called Morphosis. Although the individual pieces that belong to the Morphosis cycle differ in form, they follow the same pattern in the elaboration of the tape sound material. The diversity and complexity of timbers is the main feature in the elaboration of Quadramorphosis’ tape part, which has as basic material two kinds of sounds: sounds that are purely electronic and others that result from the electronic transformation of originally acoustic sources. These sounds are organized in various sequences according to their original character as well as their degree of transformation. Each sequence has a different criteria of transformation. The multiplicity of timbers is achieved by applying a new criterion of transformation to a sound that has already been transformed. The series of sounds to be used in the tape will somehow stretch the limits of the timbral capacity of the different percussion instruments. The tape pad will sound as if consisting of different imaginary instruments, some of which have percussion-like features and others that are either alien to it or to any other known instrument. The piece has 5 short sections. Throughout the sections the different textures of the tape part develop various degrees of expression. Another important aspect in the elaboration of the tape part deals with its spatial design, which is the result of the depth perspective (different degrees of near-far ranging from foreground to background) and the alternation of material between the different channels. The idea of space and motion is also applied to the acoustic instruments, played live, which have special set up. The four percussionists are displaced in a square with the public in its center. The audience should then be able to hear the sound from behind and from the front, from the left and from the right, etc.
