Duetto 1 was written between 1998 and 1999. Its creation process was somewhat tortuous, since it was my first adventure into live electronics.
To escape a long and very technical description of the “creation process”, which would become quite tedious for most people, I will instead make a more general introduction, a sort of “listening guide”.
Even though there is almost no perceptible pause between them, the six movements of this piece have been written separately:
1 - Preamble
2 - Partita
3 - Interlude
4 - Toccata
5 - Fantasy
6 - Postlude
“Preamble”, “Interlude” and “Postlude” are slow movements of an improvised character, essentially harmonic, which explore the resonances of the piano.
“Partita” and “Toccata” bring contrasting elements in a melody of defined contours, recognisable in every repetition/variation; faster rhythmic patterns and irregular phrases.
“Fantasy” blends both previous situations.
There are two parts to the electronic device: one was fixed in studio and the other is software for live musical control. This last one grabs some aspects of the performance and reacts to the performer’s choices in regard to the formal path or other aspects (in some movements the order of the elements is decided by the performer).
These are all control aspects that are decided live during the performance and make up the final version of the piece.
For the electronic part I recorded and modified different piano sounds.
I would finally like to dedicate this work to António de Sousa Dias. His friendship and enthusiasm for my work, as well as his precious advice about Max programming, have always been a source of inspiration beyond measure.
